Osprey
This Osprey came in to our Center with no obvious injuries… yet it can’t fly.
We have taken x-rays, and plan to run blood work to see if we can determine what the problem might be. Lucky for us this bird is very calm and seems to take treatment and handling amazingly well,
(Some think it is feigning injury just to get the free meals!!)
The osprey (pandion haliaetus) is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey also known as the sea hawk, fish hawk or fish eagle. It ranges over all continents except Antarctica and parts of South America. The diet of this bird consists of fish. The osprey is medium-sized with a 6 foot wingspread. Its’ upper body is brown with a white breast and head. Both sexes are the same size but the male is slimmer with narrower wings. Ospreys hunt for food over water, plunging to catch their prey. These birds of prey mate for life and lay from 2-4 eggs per clutch. Incubation period is 5 weeks with the chicks fledging in 8-10 weeks. The life-span of this bird is 20-25 years. Recently, the United States government took the osprey off the endangered species list.
