Meet Luther the barn owl.
  • Luther is a Barn Owl (Tyto Alba). He was hatched out at The World Bird Sanctuary on February 16 th, 2004. He is the first bird of prey Nature’s Nursery has ever purchased for programs. The decision was made to buy a captive hatched bird because our current Barn Owl, Tyto, is 15 years old and is ready for semi-retirement. It isn't very likely we would get a non-releasable Barn Owl in at The Center; so buying one was the next best option.
  • Luther is named after the director’s father, who recently passed away. The Coopers donated the money for the purchase of the owl in memory of her father.

  • We don’t actually know if Luther is a he or a she since males and females are marked the same. Females are slightly larger than males, so time may tell. If Luther ends up being a female… Lou will be her name!

  • Barn Owls are amazing nocturnal creatures. They have excellent hearing. Some scientists believe the Barn Owl can hear the heartbeat of a mouse. They are also one of the best natural mousetraps out there, with a family of 7 consuming 25 thousand small rodents a year!
  • Our hopes for Luther are to train him to fly from one person’s glove to another. We will have the perfect set up for that once we have made the move to Blue Creek and can utilize the beautiful loft in the barn located there. (See “Blue Creek Expansion” for info on that subject).
  • We will be sure to keep you posted on Luther’s progress, and update you with pictures of his changes as he matures!
