Linda Gorey & Carolyn Snyder

The next featured volunteer is actually a duo. Not so much like Batman & Robin… or The Lone Ranger & Tonto. But more like Abbott & Costello and Thelma & Louise!
You see they are both funny as can be… as well as a force to be reckoned with once you put the two of them together! Carolyn Snyder & Linda Gorey are two volunteers that I find almost impossible to see or speak to without a smile going across my face!
I debated on featuring them together because they both have so many individual qualities that warrant individual recognition… yet it seemed almost impossible to mention one without the other. Let me explain…
Linda has actually been with Nature’s Nursery for quite a long time. She began volunteering as a foster parent back in 1991. When Linda got pregnant with her 3 rd child, she took some time off from mothering the wildlife… but that didn’t last for long.
Her daughter, Megan, was practically raised with raccoons and squirrels as brothers and sisters! (That’s no commentary on Megan’s two older brothers by the way.)
Then, in 2001 I was offering one of the hotline training sessions that our volunteers find so riveting. Linda decided to try something new… so she signed up. As fate would have it, so did a new volunteer… Carolyn Snyder!
Now, hotline training sessions can leave volunteers feeling a bit overwhelmed. I throw a lot of information at the volunteers in a very short time. At the end of the training I always suggest the volunteers find a partner to work with to make the job easier. (I know you see where this is going.) Yes, Carolyn & Linda decided to pair up… and the rest is NN history!
Now, the two of them were (and are) quite interesting as hotline volunteers. You see, they hated to answer the phones. Every time the phone rang, they would both stand staring at each other saying things like; “It’s your turn.” “No, it’s your turn.” “You get it.” Sooo, I would answer it! (Somehow this volunteer hotline thing wasn’t working out quite the way I’d planned!) Well, after about a year of that, I finally convinced them to actually answer the phone when it rang! Then came the next phase of their multifaceted volunteering careers… Educational Programs!!!
Now this is where the magic begins! Carolyn & Linda are a programming combo to be reckoned with! It wasn’t long after they got started that they were being requested to do programs. They have developed their own program style utilizing children’s books and the animals at NN. I can’t begin to tell you what a huge help it is having them take on a good portion of the program workload. (Especially during the busy season!) I can’t even begin to list all the other duties they have mastered. Let it suffice to say that no other volunteers have their flair for sorting out the dead mealworms from the live!
I want to offer up a resounding THANK YOU to Linda Gorey & Carolyn Snyder for all their hard work and devoted time… and for all the laughs! I only wish I had more space to share some of the stories of working with them… but feel free to call me and I’ll be glad to fill you in!
